Free public transport across Victoria

Public transport is free across the state from Tuesday 31 March to Thursday 30 April.

This includes Melbourne trains, trams and buses; and regional trains, coaches and buses (including intertown and regional town bus services).

You do not need to tap on, but if you do you will not be charged.

Free travel is limited to trips solely within Victoria (with an exception for travel to Albury, Mount Gambier and Deniliquin). Airport buses, ferries and privately-run services are excluded.

myki passes will not be charged during the free travel period and will be extended in the background before paid travel recommences without needing to contact Transport Victoria.

V/Line and regional services

You don't need a ticket or myki to travel for free.

During this period, seat reservations are not available on V/Line train service.

Seat reservations on some coach services are still required, at zero cost to manage seat capacity, in line with existing requirements.

Regional coach tickets can be booked at staffed regional and metropolitan train stations as well as V/Line booking agents. More information about bookings is available on the V/Line website.

If you have already booked during this period you can apply online by completing the customer feedback form at vline.com.au/contact-us or visit a staffed station to seek a refund from Tuesday 31st March 2026.

Please note that seat reservations will still be honoured after a refund has been issued.

Group Travel

Group travel booking requirements remain the same during the free travel period.

You can request group travel on all public transport services within zones 1 and 2 and/or the myki regional town bus network on the Transport Victoria website.

More information on group travel for V/Line services is available on the V/Line website.
