Flinders Street Eastbound reopens as Metro Tunnel works enter final stage
The reopening of the busy stretch between Swanston and Elizabeth streets will make it easier for thousands of people to move through the heart of Melbourne each day.
The eastbound lane was originally closed in September 2019 to provide safe access for construction of Town Hall Station, one of five new underground stations delivered as part of the Metro Tunnel.
With major works at the Swanston Street entrance now complete, traffic can once again travel through this key corridor.
Flinders Street westbound will remain restricted, with a single lane operating between Russell and Swanston streets and a continued closure between Swanston and Elizabeth streets.
These closures support construction of the Fed Square entrance—the station’s final entrance—which will open in late 2026 following the successful opening of the Swanston Street entrance in January.
