Flinders Street Station will be very busy, consider using Melbourne Central, Parliament or Flagstaff stations to avoid the crowds. City Loop stations are open until 3am on NYE.

Station opening times

Train

Extra trains will run all night to get you into the city and back home again quickly, safely and easily.

Metro Tunnel services will run from 10am to 3pm on New Year’s Eve and from 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Day. Visit the Metro Tunnel service information page for details about summer timetables.

Ensure you check when your last service will leave the station.

Getting to the city 

With so many ways to celebrate this New Year’s Eve around the city, consider taking a train to Parliament, Melbourne Central or Flagstaff Station to reach your destination.

Service changes will be in place on the night.

Sunbury, Craigieburn, Upfield, Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein and Glen Waverley line trains will travel to Flinders Street Station via the City Loop.

Getting home from the city 

Getting home after the fireworks or from your celebration is easier with Parliament, Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations open until 3am.

Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations will be open all night but are expected to be very busy. Consider using the station closest to you and be sure to check when your last service leaves the station. Listen to announcements, check platform displays and speak to station staff for help if needed.

There will be a high frequency of trains from the city between 12:15am and 2:15am.

New Year’s Day

Trains, trams and most buses will operate to a Saturday timetable. Night network transport services will not operate on Thursday night.

A valid ticket is required from 6am onwards on New Years Day except for the first long distance V/Line trains.

Southern Cross Station escalator upgrade

Some escalators will be closed at Southern Cross Station on platforms 9 – 14. There will also be changes to entries and exits at the station to help manage crowds, and lifts will be in high demand. Listen to announcements, follow signage and allow extra time when moving through the station precinct. Consider using the Collins Street end of the station when interchanging platforms or to enter and exit the station.

Tram

Extra trams run on Collins and Swanston streets to get you to the city celebrations and back.

Trams will divert or run as shuttles on many CBD routes from 3:30pm until 5am.

Trams along La Trobe, Swanston, Flinders, Elizabeth and Collins streets, St Kilda Road and in Docklands run an altered service.

As an alternative travel option, consider using City Loop trains running until 3am or allow time to walk.

Route 86 trams divert along Route 11 during the fireworks between 9.15pm to 9.45pm and 11.45pm to 12.15pm.

Route 58 and 96 trams run as normal and are your best options for tram services to and from the city centre.

Regional train

V/Line will run extra services to get regional passengers to and from New Year’s Eve celebrations in Melbourne’s CBD before and after the celebrations.

Parliament, Flagstaff and Melbourne Central stations will be open until 3am on New Year’s Eve so you can make your way back to Southern Cross from these stations after the celebrations.

While V/Line services will depart regularly from Southern Cross Station after the midnight fireworks, the platforms and coach terminal will be busier than usual so please take care and consider others when travelling home.

Geelong and Ballarat lines

Trains on the Geelong and Ballarat lines may terminate at intermediate stations, please see details on journey planner.

All trains running out of the city after midnight will have six carriages. Services are expected to be very busy. Some passengers may need to stand.

The Geelong line has trains departing Southern Cross at 12:15am, 12:35am, 12:45am, 1:00am, 1:15am, 1:30am, 1:40am, 1:50am, 2:05am, 2:20am and 2:40am.

From Geelong there will also be a coach departing at 1:00am stopping all stations to Tarneit.

The Ballarat line will have trains departing Southern Cross at 12:30am, 12:50am, 1:10am, 1:37am, 2:10am and 2:30am.

Bendigo, Seymour and Traralgon lines

The Bendigo, Seymour and Traralgon lines will have road coaches departing the Southern Cross coach terminal around 12:50am.

There will also be a coach to Donnybrook and Wallan departing Southern Cross at 1:30am and 2:00am 

Metropolitan and regional bus

Over 50 bus routes are operating after midnight around Greater Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and Geelong

Night network bus routes will only operate as shown in journey planner.

There will be a high frequency of services after midnight on popular routes heading to Footscray (402), Mitcham (907), Kew (207), Templestowe (905), Sorrento (788) and Frankston (788).

There will be buses headed to Moonee Ponds on route 404 after the Footscray Park 9:30pm fireworks.

A bus lane will be activated along part of Lonsdale Street in Melbourne. Buses may still be delayed by congestion in the city and suburbs.

Service changes are in place on routes 234, 236, 567 and 605 due to New Years’ Eve road closures.

Services in Geelong will pick up passengers from the Railway Station and not along Moorabool Street.

Roads

The Department of Transport and Planning is carrying out annual West Gate Bridge maintenance and will close three lanes citybound from 9pm on Boxing Day (Thursday 26 December) until 6am on Saturday 4 January 2025.

The West Gate Tunnel has also recently opened. Drivers now have a choice between the West Gate Tunnel and the West Gate Bridge to travel between the city and the west. Plan your route, follow the overhead signs and drive carefully.

Flemington Racecourse New Year’s Eve services

Train

Trains will run to and from Flemington for the race day and from the conclusion of the race day until venue close.

Departure times:

Tram

Route 57 runs along Epsom Road beside Flemington Racecourse. Extra trams run throughout the night.

Metropolitan Bus

Routes 472 and 404 run close to Flemington Racecourse. Many bus routes are operating after midnight around Greater Melbourne and Geelong.
