Public transport over the Christmas and Boxing Day Holidays

Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December
Metropolitan train
- Metro trains will run to a Sunday timetable.
- Night Network services will not operate on Sunday morning.
- The Metro Tunnel is now open – see the Metro Tunnel service information page for details.
Summer Start weekend timetable (30 November 2025 to 1 February 2026)
- Metro Tunnel services run every 20 minutes between Westall and West Footscray from 10:00am to 7:00pm.
- Some services extend to:
- East Pakenham every 40 minutes, and
- Sunbury every 60 minutes.
- All other trains on the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines continue to run through the City Loop on their regular timetable.
Metropolitan tram
- Trams will run to a 30-minute frequency from the commencement of the normal Thursday timetable until Sunday timetable commences, trams will then run to a Sunday frequency.
- Night network services will not run.
Regional train and coach
V/Line trains will run to a Sunday timetable.
The following V/Line coaches will operate on Christmas Day. All other coach services are cancelled.
- Lorne/Apollo Bay services operate to a normal Sunday timetable. The Summer Holiday additional coaches do NOToperate on Christmas Day.
- 9:10pm Melbourne – Mildura service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 10:05pm Mildura – Melbourne service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 12:03pm Shepparton – Cobram service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 9:18pm Shepparton – Griffith service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 5:37am Cobram – Shepparton service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 12:04pm Griffith – Shepparton service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 11:01am Melbourne – Leongatha service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 2:44pm Leongatha – Melbourne service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 9:16am Dandenong – Cowes service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 3:14pm Dandenong – Cowes service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 11:43am Cowes – Dandenong service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- 5:51pm Cowes – Dandenong service will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
Metropolitan and regional bus
- Metropolitan buses will mostly run to a Sunday timetable, with some exceptions.
- Regional bus services will vary depending on the operator.
- Night network services will not run.
Boxing Day, Friday 26 December
On Boxing Day, extra trams, Metro trains, and regional train services will run for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
Metropolitan train
- Metro trains will run to a Saturday timetable, including the Saturday evening Night Network services.

- Capital Link 9:45 am Canberra – Bairnsdale will operate as per Saturday school holiday timetable
- Geelong – Apollo Bay summer only additional services will operate.
- 9:10pm Melbourne – Mildura will operate to a Thursday timetable.
- 10:05pm Mildura – Melbourne will operate to a Thursday timetable.
- Mallacoota services will operate to a holiday timetable.
Metropolitan and regional bus
- Metropolitan buses will mostly run to a Saturday timetable, with some exceptions.
- Regional bus services will vary depending on the operator.
- Night network services will run as normal.
Shuttle buses will run between Chadstone Shopping Centre and Oakleigh Station, and between Essendon DFO and Essendon Station. Route 903 may divert at times bypassing these shopping centres to maintain punctuality.

Ticketing
- On public holidays, your daily myki fare is capped at $7.60 ($3.80 for concessions and seniors), giving you unlimited travel all day.
- While some concession holders receive free travel on weekends, however this does not apply on public holidays.
- Public holiday fare caps apply to all passengers, including seniors.
