Major delays this weekend in the west and east
Please plan ahead and allow extra time.
Travelling to the west
The West Gate Freeway outbound will be closed 24/7 between Williamstown Road and Millers Road from 11pm Friday 29 August to 5am Monday 1 September 2025.
The closure is for essential works on the West Gate Tunnel.
Extreme delays of over 90 minutes are expected.
- Traffic will be diverted off at Montague Street or the Bolte Bridge. Follow the detour signs
- If coming from Kings Way, continue onto King Street and Dynon Road via Dudley Street
- Traffic will need to re-enter the freeway using either Millers Road or Geelong Road
Avoid the area, if you can or seek an alternative route. If you need to travel from the east of Melbourne to the west, consider detouring early and wide.

There are also expected to be delays to services on the following lines due to road congestion:
- Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines: On 30 and 31 August 2025 express coaches will replace trains between Southern Cross and Bacchus Marsh. Passengers are advised to allow up to an extra two hours for travel on Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough replacement coaches. Read more.
- Geelong line: Replacement coach services will run from Southern Cross to Waurn Ponds from 9pm to last service on Sunday 31 August 2025. Read more.
- Travelling on V/Line services: All coach replacement services for the Traralgon, Bairnsdale, Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines all weekend and Geelong Line after 9pmĀ departing from Southern Cross Station will have extended journey times due to increased traffic congestion in the area.
- Werribee and Williamstown lines: Buses replace trains between Newport and Werribee from 10.30pm Friday 29 August to 5am Saturday 30 August 2025, from 10.30pm Saturday 30 August to 6am Sunday 31 August 2025 and also from 8.30pm to last service on Sunday 31 August 2025. Read more.
Travelling from the east
If you are travelling to Melbourne from the east from Friday 29 August until Saturday 6 September, significant delays are expected on key freeways and rail lines due to major construction works on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, West Gate Tunnel and North East Link projects.
- Cranbourne and Pakenham lines: From 9pm on Friday 29 August to 5am on Saturday 6 September 2025, buses will replace trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines between Parliament, Caulfield and Westall stations. Read more.
- Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines: Coaches replace Traralgon and Bairnsdale line trains between East Pakenham and Southern Cross from the night of Friday 29 August to Friday 5 September 2025. Allow up to an extra two hours for your travel with extended journey times expected for replacement buses due to increased traffic congestion in the area. Read more.
- Eastern Freeway: Closed citybound between Doncaster Road and Bulleen Road on Friday 29 August and Saturday 30 August, 11pm to 7am each night.
