Before you travel

Free travel
Metropolitan trains, trams, buses, and regional town buses will be free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.
V/Line travel is also free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve to 6am on New Year's Day. The first V/Line service on each line departing Melbourne on New Year's Day is also free – even if it departs after 6am.
No valid myki is required during free travel periods. Metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations and passengers touching on after 6pm won't be charged. If passengers touch on before 6pm, they should make sure to touch off or they may be charged a default fare.
Passengers on the first timetabled V/Line services on New Year's Day leaving Melbourne should avoid touching on to avoid myki money fares.
Services running all night
Metropolitan trains and trams (except Routes 78 and 82) will run all night to help you travel to your New Year's Eve event and back again.

Metropolitan train
Access to CBD stations during New Year's Eve
Stations will operate as normal. Parents with prams, seniors or people with special needs can access the concourse at any time and lifts are for their use.
From 6pm to 10pm on 31 December 2023, the exit via Northbank at Flinders Street Station will be closed and passengers can exit via the Flinders Street concourse or Elizabeth Street underpass.
From 10pm on 31 December 2023, the exit via Northbank at Flinders Street Station will be closed and passengers will be redirected to exit via the Elizabeth Street underpass only.
From 11:45pm on 31 December 2023, City Loop Stations will close.
31 December 2023
From first service until last service all services will operate to a normal Sunday timetable.
- From 7pm until 1:45am the Burnley group will run via the City Loop to Flinders Street then out direct.
- Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations will be open all night on New Year's Eve, while City Loop stations (Parliament, Flagstaff and Melbourne Central stations) will be closed from 11:45pm.
- From prior to midnight, normal Sunday services will be operating to Flinders Street Station.
- From 6pm to 10pm, additional services will be operating via CBD Stations and terminating at Flinders Street Station.

Before midnight there will be additional trains to Flinders Street Station from:

- From Upper Ferntree Gully departing: 6:30pm.
- From Lilydale departing: 8:05pm, 8:43pm.
- From Belgrave departing: 8:20pm.
Craigieburn/Sunbury/Upfield/Werribee lines:
- From Craigieburn departing: 7:05pm, 7:47pm, 7:55pm, 8:16pm, 8:25pm, 8:55pm.

- From 12:15am to 1:45am, all services will be running approximately 5-to-15-minute frequency.
- From 1:45am to 2:45am, all services will be running approximately 30-minute frequency.
- From 2:45am, all services will be running approximately 60-minute frequency until first service on Monday morning.

Metropolitan tram
31 December 2023 - 1 January 2024
- Trams will operate to a Sunday timetable on Sunday 31 December.
- From 4pm on New Year's Eve until 3am on New Year’s Day, Shuttle services, service changes and altered frequencies will apply on Routes 1, 3, 3a, 5, 6, 16, 19, 48, 57, 58, 59, 64, 67, 70, 72, 75, 78, 86, 96 and 109.
- From 3am until the first normal service on Monday, Night Trams run every 30 minutes on routes 19, 67, 75, 86, 96 and 109.
SHUTTLE SERVICE
Between 4pm and 3am shuttle services will operate along the following corridors:
- St Kilda Road between Windsor (Stop 20 Park St/St Kilda Road) and ANZAC Station (Stop 20 Park St/St Kilda Road) will operate to the following frequencies:
- 5pm to 6:30pm – 10-minute frequency
- 6:30pm to 1am – 5-minute frequency
- 1am to 3am – 15-minute frequency
- Melbourne University between Melbourne University (Stop 1 Melbourne University/Swanston Street) and State Library (Stop 10 Melbourne Central Station/Swanston Street) will operate a 10-minute frequency, from 5pm to 3am.
- Collins Street between Elizabeth Street (Stop 5 Elizabeth St / Collins Street) and Victoria Harbour (Stop D18 Victoria Harbour) will operate an 8-minute frequency, from 10pm to 1am.
- Flinders Street between Elizabeth Street (Stop 4 Flinders Street Station/Elizabeth Street) and Flinders Street West (Stop D6 Flinders St West) will operate a 15-minute frequency, from 4pm to 3am
- Footscray Park between Footscray Station (Stop 64 Footscray Station/Leeds Street) and West Road (Stop 48 West Rd/Raleigh Road) will operate a 15-minute frequency, from 9pm to 10:30pm.
SWANSTON STREET
From 4:30pm to 3am the following service changes will apply:
- Route 1 will operate in 2 sections between:
- East Coburg and State Library
- South Melbourne Beach and Stop 116 City Road
- Route 3a will operate a shortened service (via Fitzroy Street) between:
- East Malvern and St Kilda Junction
- Route 5 will operate a shortened service between:
- Malvern and Stop 20 Anzac Station
- Route 6 will operate in 2 sections between:
- Moreland and State Library
- Glen Iris and Stop 22 Toorak Road
- Route 16 will operate a shortened service between:
- Kew and St Kilda Junction
- Route 64 will operate a shortened service between:
- East Brighton and Stop 20 ANZAC Station
- Route 67 will operate a shortened service between:
- Carnegie and St Kilda Junction
- Route 72 will operate a shortened service between:
- Camberwell and Stop 22 Toorak Road
From 4:30pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply to Routes 1, 3a, 5, 6, 16, 67, 72:
- 4:30pm to 10pm – 10-minute frequency
- 10pm to 1:15am – 8-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
From 4:30pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply for Route 64:
- 4:30pm to 1:15am – 20-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
WILLIAM STREET
From 4:30pm to 3am, Route 58 will operate to its full normal route, to the following frequencies:
- 4:30pm to 10pm – 10-minute frequency
- 10pm to 12:15am – 8 -minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 5-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
ELIZABETH STREET
From 4:30pm to 3am the following service changes will apply:
- Route 19, 57, and 59 operates shortened routes with no trams between Melbourne Central (Lonsdale St/Elizabeth St) and Flinders St Station/Elizabeth St.
From 4:30pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply to Route 19:
- 4:30pm to 9:15pm – 10-minute frequency
- 9:15pm to 12:15am – 8 -minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 6-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
From 4:30pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply to Routes 57 and 59:
- 4:30pm to 9:15pm – 10-minute frequency
- 9:15pm to 12:15am – 8 -minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 6-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 2:45am – 30-minute frequency
COLLINS STREET
From 6:30pm to 3am the following service changes will apply:
- Route 11 will operate a shortened route between West Preston and Stop 7, 101 Collins Street.
- Route 48 will operate a shortened route between North Balwyn and Stop 7, 101 Collins Street.
- Route 12 and 109 will be diverted via La Trobe Street between Spring St and Spencer St.
From 6:30pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply:
- 6:30pm to 9:15pm – 10-minute frequency
- 9:15pm to 12:15am – 8 -minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 5-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
DOCKLANDS – Harbour Esplanade
From 4pm to 3am there will be no trams in Harbour Esplanade and the following service changes will apply:
FLINDERS STREET
- Routes 70 will operate a shortened service between Wattle Park and Stop 6 Russell St/ Flinders Street.
- Route 75 will operate a shortened service between Vermont South and Stop 6 Russell St/ Flinders Street.
From 4pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply:
- 4pm to 10pm – 10-minute frequency
- 10pm to 12:15am – 7-minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 5-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
BOURKE STREET
- Route 86 will operate a shortened service between Bundoora Terminus and Stop 119 Spencer St/La Trobe Street.
- Route 96 will operate to its normal timetable until 5:30pm, from which the below frequencies will apply.
From 4pm to 3am the following frequencies will apply:
- 4pm to 9:15pm – 10-minute frequency
- 9:15pm to 12:15am – 8-minute frequency
- 12:15am to 1:15am – 6-minute frequency
- 1:15am to 2am – 15-minute frequency
- 2am to 3am – 30-minute frequency
LA TROBE STREET
- Route 30 will operate a 20-minute frequency between La Trobe Street/Spencer Street and St Vincents Plaza from 4pm until last service.
- City Circle (Route 35) will not operate all day.
SUBURBAN SERVICES
- From 6pm on New Year’s Eve until last tram on New Year’s Day, Route 78 will transfer from a Sunday timetable to a Saturday timetable.
From 3am, the listed tram services will revert to the Night Tram network and run a 30-minute service until first service on Monday morning. You can travel between the city and St Kilda, Coburg, Bundoora, Port Melbourne, Carnegie, Box Hill, Vermont South and Brunswick.
- 19 – Elizabeth St/Flinders St to North Coburg
- 67 – Melbourne University via Swanston St & St Kilda Road to Carnegie
- 75 – Central Pier Docklands via Flinders Street to Vermont South
- 86 – Waterfront City Docklands via Bourke St to Bundoora RMIT
- 96 – St Kilda Beach via Spencer Street to East Brunswick
- 109 – Port Melbourne via Collins Street to Box Hill

Metropolitan bus
There'll be no additional services to bus routes in the city on New Year's Eve.
Buses will run to the normal Sunday timetable on Sunday 31 December. Night Network buses will run.

To assist patrons in travelling to and from New Year’s Eve in Melbourne, the following Night Network bus routes will run to a Saturday timetable on New Year’s Eve Sunday 31 December 2023, into New Years Day on Monday 1 January 2024.

A normal Sunday timetable will operate on New Year’s Eve.
Night Coach services will operate in the early hours of New Year's Day, departing at 1am and 2am from the Southern Cross Coach Terminal.
Geelong Line
Additional services will depart from Waurn Ponds to Southern Cross at 6:30pm and 7:26pm.
Additional train services will depart from Southern Cross at 1am, 1:20am, 1:40am and 2:20am (New Year’s Day), to Geelong.
Additional Night Network coach services to Lara and Deakin University/Waurn Ponds will depart from Southern Cross at 2:15am.
Ballarat Line
Additional train services to Wendouree will depart from Southern Cross at 12:50am and 2:10am.
Additional Night Network coach services to Ballarat will depart from Southern Cross at 1:10am and 2:10am.
Bendigo Line
Last train service departs Southern Cross at 6:43pm to Bendigo.
Additional Night Network coach services to Bendigo will depart Southern Cross at 1:10am and 2:10am.
A special New Years Eve coach departs Southern Cross at 1.00am, stopping as required - Clarkefield to Bendigo.
Seymour Line
Last scheduled train departs Southern Cross at 9:45pm to Seymour.
Additional Night Network coach services to Puckapunyal will depart Southern Cross at 2:00am.
A special New Years Eve coach departs Southern Cross at 1.00am, stopping as required to Seymour.
Traralgon Line
Last scheduled train departs Southern Cross at 9:27pm to Traralgon.
Additional Night Network coach services will depart at 2am.
