Public transport for New Year's Eve 2022
Public transport is free from 6pm and running all night on New Year's Eve, and is still the best way to get around Melbourne welcome in the new year!

Before you travel

Free travel
Metropolitan trains, trams, buses and regional town buses will be free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.
V/Line travel will be free on services where touch on occurs after 6pm on New Year’s Eve and 6am on New Year's Day. Travel is also free on the first timetabled V/Line service departing Melbourne on New Year's Day for regional Victoria.
Passengers do not need to travel with a valid myki during periods of free travel. Metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations. Passengers who touch on their myki after 6pm will not be charged. If passengers touch on before 6pm, they should make sure to touch off or they may be charged a default fare.
Passengers leaving Melbourne on the first timetabled V/Line services on New Year's Day should avoid touching on, otherwise a myki money fare will apply. In the event that passengers are charged to travel on the first timetabled V/Line service leaving Melbourne, passengers are advised to call our call centre.
Services running all night
Metropolitan trains and trams (except Routes 78 and 82) will run all night to help you travel to your New Year's Eve event and back again.

Most services will be running to a Sunday timetable on New Year's Day.

Metropolitan train
Access to CBD stations during New Year's Eve
The station will operate as normal. Parents with prams, seniors or people with special needs can access the concourse at any time and lifts are for their use.
31 December 2022
From first service until last service all services will operate to a normal Saturday timetable.
- From 7pm until 1.45am the Burnley group will run via the City Loop to Flinders Street then out direct.
- Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations will be open all night on New Year's Eve, while City Loop stations (Parliament, Flagstaff and Melbourne Central stations) will be closed from 11.45pm.
From Prior to midnight, normal and additional services will be operating to Flinders Street Station from 7pm.
1 January 2023
- From 12.15am to 1.45am, all services will be running approximately 5 to 15 minute service
- From 1.45am to 2:45am, all services will be running approximately 30 minute service.
- From 2:45am, all services will be running approximately 60 minute service until first service on Sunday morning.

Metropolitan tram

- Trams will operate to a Saturday timetable on Saturday 31 December.
- From 3am until the first normal service on Sunday, trams will operate to a 60 minute frequency.
- Please note: Tram routes 30, 35, 70, 75, 78, 82 and 86 will operate to an altered timetable service.
From 5pm to 3am on New Year's Eve, Route 1, 3, 3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 trams will be altered.

- St Kilda Road – Windsor (Stop 20 Park St /St Kilda Road) to ANZAC Station (Stop 20 Park St/St Kilda Road) – from 5:30pm to 3am
- 5:30pm to 6:30pm – 10-minute frequency
- 6:30pm to 1:00am – 5-minute frequency
- 1:00am to 3:00am - 15-minute frequency
- Melbourne University – Melbourne University (Stop 1 Melbourne University/Swanston Street) to State Library (Stop 10 Melbourne Central Station/Swanston Street) – from 5:30pm to 3am
- 5:30pm to 3:00am - 10-minute frequency
- Collins Street – Elizabeth Street (Stop 5 Elizabeth St / Collins Street) to Victoria Harbour (Stop D18 Victoria Harbour) – from 10:00pm to 1am
- 10:00pm to 1:00am - 8-minute frequency
- Flinders Street – Elizabeth Street (Stop 4 Flinders Street Station/Elizabeth Street) to Flinders Street West (Stop D6 Flinders St West) – from 5:30pm to 3am

Elizabeth Street trams
- Route 19, 57, and 57 operates shortened routes with no trams between Melbourne Central (Lonsdale St/Elizabeth St) and Flinders St Station/Elizabeth St.
Williams Street trams
- Route 58 will operator its full normal routes
Collins Street trams
- Route 11 will operate shortened route from 10:00pm to 1:00am from Preston to Stop 7, 101 Collins Street.
- Route 12 and 109 will be diverted via La Trobe Street from 10:00pm to 1:00am
- Route 48 will operate shortened route from 10:00pm to 1:00am from North Balwyn to Stop 7 101 Collins Street.
Docklands – Harbour Esplanade trams

- Route 70 and 75 will terminate at Stop 6 Russell St / Flinders Street
- Route 86 will terminate at Stop 119 Spencer St / La Trobe Street
- Route 30 will terminate in La Trobe Street / Spencer Street and St Vincent Plaza
- City Circle (Route 35) will not operate

Metropolitan bus
There'll be no additional services to bus routes in the city on New Year's Eve.
Route 605 buses will be diverted due to the closure of Birdwood Avenue and Linlithgow Avenue. These services will be diverted from first service and will travel along Alexandra Avenue, City Road, resuming normal service from Power Street missing Anderson Street, Domain Road, Birdwood Avenue, Linlithgow Avenue, and Southbank Bouveland until last service.
Route 234 (Garden City to City – Queen Victoria Market) and 236 (Garden City to City – Queen Victoria Market via City) buses will be diverted due to the closure of Flinders Street from 5pm. These services will be diverted from 5pm and will travel along City Road, Clarendon Street, Collins Street into Queen Street resuming to normal service, missing Flinders Street (William Street to Queen Street) and Queen Street (Flinders Street to Collins Street) until last service.
Buses will run to the normal Saturday timetable on Saturday 31 December. Night Network buses will run.

Night Coach services will operate in the early hours of New Year's Day, departing at 1am/2am from the Southern Cross Coach Terminal.
Geelong Line
Additional service will depart from Warun Ponds to southern Cross at 8:00pm
Last train service departs at 1.10am (New Year’s Day), to Geelong.
Additional Night Network coach service to Lara and Deakins University / Warun Ponds will depart at 2.15am.
Ballarat Line
Last train service departs at 12:16am to Wendouree
Additional Night Network coach services will depart at 1.10am and 2.10am.
Bendigo Line
Last train service departs at 11:55pm to Bendigo
Additional Night Network coach services will depart at 1.05am and 2.05am.
Seymour Line
