Public transport for New Year's Eve 2021

News > Events

Public transport is free from 6pm and running all night on New Year's Eve, and is still the best way to get around Melbourne welcome in the new year!

Before you travel

QR codes have been rolled out across the public transport network to help keep passengers safe. Please check-in every time you see a QR code and register your myki as well. The details you share are used to contact you when necessary, to prevent further spread of COVID-19 in the community

When travelling on public transport you must wear a fitted face mask covering your nose and mouth, unless you have a lawful reason for not doing so, and ensure you wear it for your entire journey.

Plan your journey using Journey Planner and check Disruptions for service changes that may affect your journey.

Free travel

Metropolitan trains, trams, buses and regional town buses will be free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.

V/Line travel will be free on services where touch on occurs after 6pm on New Year’s Eve and 6am on New Year's Day. Travel is also free on the first timetabled V/Line service departing Melbourne on New Year's Day for regional Victoria.

Passengers do not need to travel with a valid myki during periods of free travel. Metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations. Passengers who touch on their myki after 6pm will not be charged. If passengers touch on before 6pm, they should make sure to touch off or they may be charged a default fare.

Passengers leaving Melbourne on the first timetabled V/Line services on New Year's Day should avoid touching on, otherwise a myki money fare will apply. In the event that passengers are charged to travel on the first timetabled V/Line service leaving Melbourne, passengers are advised to call our call centre.

Metropolitan trains and trams (except Routes 78 and 82) will run all night to help you travel to your New Year's Eve event and back again.
